Frequently Asked Questions

 

1.      What trades are taught in our apprenticeship program?

There are three (3) separate trades taught in our program.  They are:

·        Plumbing

·        Pipe Fitting

·        Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning & Refrigeration

2.      Where are the Training Centers located?

We have two (2) Training Centers:

  • The first is located at 1623 Market Street, San Francisco, Ca 94103

  • The second is located at 3473 Santa Rosa Avenue, Santa Rosa, Ca 95407

3.      What is the starting hourly wage?

·        It is currently either $15.20 per hour or $19.00 per hour, depending on your work assignment.  Included is healthcare coverage (medical, dental, vision care, etc.) for you and your dependents.  Journeyman wage is currently $38.00 per hour or $47.50 per hour, depending on your work assignment

4.      How long is the Apprenticeship Program?

·        Completion of the program takes a minimum of five years.  The years are broken down into ten (10) periods.  During this time, you will work during the day.  You will be paid for the hours you work.  You will also be required to attend Related and Supplemental Instructional Classes in the evenings, two (2) to three (3) nights per week.  You will not be paid while attending classes however the classes are free.

5.      When are applications available?

·        Applications will be available sometime in June 2008.  Exact dates for the application period are determined 30 to 45 days prior.

6.      When can I find out the exact dates of the application period?

·        You may check online at www.ualocal38.org

·        You may contact the Apprenticeship Department at 415-626-2000.

·        You may fill out your contact information on the postcard portion of the Apprenticeship Brochure and return it to our office.  Then, before the application period arises, you will receive notification by mail informing you of the dates.

7.      Do I need to have previous experience to enter the program?

No.  However, there are three (3) minimum requirements you must meet before you may submit an application.  They are:

·        Age – Applicants must be 17 years of age (you must be 18 years of age to become indentured).  A valid California driver’s license or birth certificate is required for identification and proof of age when making your application.

·        Education – Must be a High School Graduate with diploma or its equivalent.  It is required for applicants to bring their original diploma or G.E.D. paperwork when applying.

·        Physical Requirements – Must be able to perform the physical requirements of the trade.

Applications will not be accepted if the above requirements are not met.

8.      What is the procedure after I submit my application?

·        You will be required to take a written examination consisting of basic mathematics and basic mechanical reasoning.  If you pass this portion with a 70% or higher you will be asked to come back for an oral interview.

9.      Is there a study guide for the examination?

·        No.  You may go to your local library and review basic mathematics books.

10.  What happens if I receive passing scores on both the written test and the oral interview?

·        You will be placed on a ranked and rated eligibility list (highest score down) for possible call-up when new apprentices are to be taken into the program.  This list is active for two (2) years.  Potential calls into the program will be based on industry needs.

11.  Am I guaranteed a spot in the program if I am placed on the Eligibility List?

·        No.  Submitting an application and/or placement on the Eligibility List does not guarantee employment or acceptance into the program.

12.  What happens if my name is not called from the Eligibility List?

·        The list will expire after two (2) years.  If your name has not been called you will be notified by mail that the list will expire.  If you are interested, you must submit a new application.  You will be required to complete the testing procedures and receive passing scores in order to be placed on the new Eligibility List.
